The short version
Sub goalie pricing in rec and beer league hockey ranges from free (many goalies will play just for the ice time) to a per-game rate the goalie sets — typically higher for late-night games, long drives, playoff games, or higher-level hockey. There's no standard price, which is exactly why the "how much do I owe you?" conversation at the rink is so awkward.
What drives the price up or down
- Notice. A game posted a week out gets more offers than one posted at 5pm for 10pm — but desperate games still get filled, sometimes at a premium.
- Time slot. The 11pm Tuesday slot costs more goodwill (or money) than the 7pm Saturday slot.
- Level. Higher divisions and competitive leagues command higher rates.
- Supply in your area. More goalies nearby means more offers and better prices.
How pricing works on SubPlayers
Instead of guessing, you post your game and goalies send offers with their rate attached. You compare offers — rate, reviews, ratings — and pick.
